Electroplating

Electroplating is a process that uses an electric current to deposit a thin layer of metal onto the surface of a workpiece. This technique is widely used for decorative, protective, and functional purposes across various industries.

  • Electrolyte Solution: A solution containing metal ions of the plating metal is prepared. This solution is called the electrolyte or plating bath.
  • Anode: The anode is typically made of the metal to be plated onto the workpiece. It dissolves into the electrolyte to replenish the metal ions.
  • Cathode: The workpiece to be plated is connected to the negative terminal of the power supply, making it the cathode.

Common Electroplating Metals

Nickel:

  • Applications: Provides a hard, corrosion-resistant finish. Commonly used for decorative purposes, automotive parts, and household items.

Tin:

  • Applications:Applied for corrosion resistance, solderability in electronics, and in food packaging to prevent rust and contamination.

Zinc-Nickel:

  • Applications:versatile and effective solution for applications requiring high levels of corrosion protection and durability, making it a popular choice in many industries.

Zinc:

  • Applications: Provides corrosion protection for steel and iron. Commonly used in the automotive and construction industries.

Copper:

  • Applications: Often used as an undercoat for other plating processes and in printed circuit boards (PCBs) due to its excellent electrical conductivity.

Gold:

  • Applications: Used for electrical connectors, jewelry, and decorative items due to its excellent conductivity, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal.

Silver:

  • Applications: Used for electrical components, jewelry, and cutlery. Silver has high electrical conductivity and a bright finish.
